Soccer is the most popular sport in the country. The foreign teams are very popular in Qatar, especially Paris Saint Germain. The club’s president Nasser Ghanin Al-Khelaifi was born in Doha in Qatar. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of BEIN Media group, chairman of Qatar sports investments, president of the Qatar Tennis Federation and vice president of the Asian Tennis Federation for West Asia. In South America we are used to seeing crowded stadiums. In Qatar it is the opposite. We rarely see stadiums with too many supporters.

 

Qatari Football National Team

It is part of the Asian confederation, and has never qualified for a World Cup. But they have already won the Gulf Cup three times, in 1992, 2004 and now, recently, in 2014. The team has already qualified for two Olympic Games in 1984 and 1992. The player Emerson Sheik, is a naturalized Qatari and has already played three games for the local national team. Another Brazilian who stands out in the national team is Fábio Montezine, discovered by São Paulo Football Club, who has already played in 28 games and got to be the team’s captain. In the Gulf Cup at the end of November 2014, Qatar has won over Saudi Arabia by 2×1. The title has given a new status for the national team, which is now expecting to reach higher flights in the Asia Cup, in 2015. One of the country’s biggest prides is to have successfully hosted the 15th Asian Games, officially known as the XV Asiad; Asia’s Olympics . The event took place from December 1st  to December 15th , 2006. Doha was the first city in its region and only the second in West Asia (following Tehran in 1974) to host the games. Until this day the games mascot is up there at the Corniche.
